The Center and Safe Schools Coalition Partner
on Hate Crime/Anti-Violence Project

Hate crimes and violence poses a serious threat to our Washington communities, especially in schools. In every region of the state, incidents have occurred in which racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities have been harassed, intimidated, assaulted and even murdered. Violence, bullying, and the resulting fear erodes our sense of safety, security, collaboration and well-being.

The Seattle LGBT Community Center and Safe Schools Coalition are pleased to announce the creation of a JustServe AmeriCorps position to address these issues. The organizations recognize a need to collaboratively address the public safety of LGBT individuals in a community wide effort. Our AmeriCorps member, Kristina Armenakis, will

1 Manage the Safe Schools Coalition Speakers' Bureau, organizing workshops on "Understanding and Addressing Anti-GLBTQ and Other Bias-Based Harassment and Violence in Schools,"
2 Collect data to combat, support, and fund anti-violence/harassment _ hate crime efforts over the next several years,
3 Increase youth and community awareness regarding where victims/targets of hate crimes can access appropriate support services.

"Break the silence. This is not only for the benefit of LGBT people, but for our whole society. By working together and spreading the word, we can break through the silence that surrounds the lives of people affected by homophobia, bullying, and hate crimes. We can help make homophobic behavior unacceptable." Thomas hopes the collaboration will provide leadership and momentum for LGBT violence prevention strategizing and organizing.

The Seattle LGBT Community Center opened its doors in 2002 as meeting place for the LGBT Community to grow together, increase public understanding, and celebrate diversity. From working with our 75+ Organizational Members, as well as providing access to services for anyone, The Center has worked towards a more empowered community.

Safe Schools Coalition is public-private partnership whose goal is to reduce bias-based bullying and violence in schools and to help schools better meet the needs of sexual minority youth and children with sexual minority parents/guardians locally, nationally and internationally.

For more information, or to help support this effort, please contact Shannon Thomas, Executive Director of The Center, at 206-323-2227.
